In the wake of graduating from a Bachelor of Music program (Boston University 1963), but subsequently witnessing the liberal arts as a teacher (Brown University, 1971-75), I am convinced that education should be one which integrates the study of arts and studies of other fields. This shouldn't come as a surprise from an ethnomusicologist who has an MA from 1967 and a Ph.D. at UCLA. The ethnomusicology degree program was my first in UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) sits comfortably in a department of music within the College of Letters and Science. Being able to explore multiple subjects is something I like. Both undergraduates and graduate students (for which I've written three texts - Music in India, The Classical Traditions of India, Thinking Musically: Music in Japan - Experience Music: Expressing Cultural Expression) love my classes. Thereafter, I'll switch between periods that are primarily academic activities and periods of administrative tasks (I was Chair of Department of Music from 1983 to 1988, Dean for undergraduate Advising in 1992-98 and Chair of College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-98; Chairperson of Group of Asian Studies since 1999 and am now back as Chair of Department of Music).
